The other day Emily Cater was online looking at fabric, which is something she does a fair bit of, and she called out to me to come and have a look at this one because we had just decided to call our band Mermaid and Mariner and the whole point of having a band is to wear matching costumes, really, and this fabric had the following: 1) Mermaids 2) Mariners 3) Whales 4) Whalers 5) The titanic struggle between man and beast (beast 1- man 0 in this case) 6) Birds, because why not? So she decided to get some to make a dress of it and made a mental note to do so as soon as possible. Then a couple of days later she was browsing in a fabric store on her lunch break, which again is something that she does a fair bit of, and she overheard somebody talking to the shop person about a particular fabric they stocked that had mermaids, mariners, whales, whalers and the titanic struggle between man and beast on it and how this particular fabric would be perfect for his nephew, who is a person who goes about the place singing songs about ships and the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. And for a second she thought thats odd, is there some other poor fool in Auckland who is doomed to wander the earth warbling about explorers? And is there therefore some sort of support group that Sam could join, perhaps? But of course the person turned out to be my extraordinary uncle John Kite, who is a fashionista of renown and a man very dear to both of our hearts, and when Em told him that she was planning to make a dress out of that very fabric he immediately promised to make me a shirt out of the same print, so that the two of us could matchy-match like some sort of bizarre institutional showband from a 19th century retreat for the criminally unusual. And he is a man very much of his word and when he says he will do a thing, the thing is done, and so with aroha and the crackling fires of home and hearth I present to you the work of art that is our mermaid and mariner stage getup for tonights show at The Wine Cellar and hopefully many more to come. Thanks a million Uncle John!
