The other day I was with friends at the movies and saw a preview for The Good Lie. Proceeded to freak out that they have apparently made a movie of my life - ie. Hollywoods take on an employment counselor working with refugees as they adjust to life in the US and try to reunite with their families. The United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, of which VRRP is a field office, has launched a national informational campaign (refugeesinamerica.org) to offer some more information about refugee resettlement, and what our network of resettlement staffers do around the US and abroad. Definitely worth checking out. Not to mention that many of the images are of our friends and neighbors here in Vermont, are taken by yours truly, or have me in them awkwardly enough. So lucky to be doing this work and meeting so many amazing people! As our Bhutanese and Nepali neighbors celebrate Dashain, the triumph of good over evil, I am reminded to see and celebrate the good in my work and my life each day. I was lucky enough to celebrate a piece of Dashain with the Bhattarais this year and to recieve tika and blessings from Abinash s parents. So lucky to be a part of the happiness and optimism my New American friends and neighbors bring out in the world around them. Unfortunately, The Good Lie is not showing here in Vermont. If it is in theaters near you, do check it out. Whether you have ever personally known a refugee or not, to understand the struggles and the triumph of building a totally new future from nothing, in a land you dont know, and making it home, offers us all important perspective on our own lives.
