The other day, my Black Church Studies professor gave us all a calendar about black history. Ever month has a different picture of the horrible things that have happened to black people in America, from people being hung, to white people with horribly offensive signs and faces aimed at children. I couldn’t help but wonder, “Who in their right minds would hang something like this up so they would see it everyday?” Not that we should forget history, but we cannot effectively make history, history, if we are perpetually stuck in bitterness (even if the bitterness is deserved). But we all do this. I have “likes” on my Facebook page that constantly pops up articles that lean very heavily in the direction in which I agree. Often that means attacking the side in which I do not agree. I don’t think my views are wrong per se, but if I am allow myself to get wrapped up on a view that excludes someone or devalues or disrespects another then I am falling prey to the same behavior that I condemn in others. Think about the “calendars” in our lives this week as we go about our days. What things do we welcome that allow us and encourage us to store up bitterness, envy, rage, or in un-forgiveness against the “other”? Are we willing to take down those “calendars” and un-like those things in our lives that divide us and remind us to be angry? Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Philippians 4:8
