The other night, as I was tucking William into bed, he asked me not to look at the calendar until after Thursday. “Why?” I asked, as I pulled the covers up to his chin. He shrugged. “Oh, no real reason.” I sat down on the edge of his bed and looked him in the eye. “Tell me, William. I need to know. Why shouldn’t I look at the calendar?” William looked down. His voice grew small. “Thursday is Boss’s Day. I want to see it first so I can be the boss that day.” Holding back a laugh, I tried to explain that Boss’s Day is a day to celebrate bosses, not a day to be the boss. He wasnt buying it. “Mother’s Day celebrates mothers. Father’s Day celebrates fathers. Boss’s Day celebrates bosses.” The light dawned, and disappointment washed over his face.
