The ould villain, Joe Goebbels, would be proud of them. The Fine - TopicsExpress

The ould villain, Joe Goebbels, would be proud of them. The Fine Gael side of the coalition equation would know what Im talking about, having a history of familiarity with the Nazis. Some in the Labour Party would know a bit about Joe too, and his methods. What was it he said? “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” Think election promises. What was it that Pat Rabbitte said about telling lies? Isnt that what you tend to do during an election? Indeed it is, at least for some, and we know who they are. But stick with the present. We are all standing with hands outstretched for the Water Conservation Grant. It is free money in our pockets. It comes courtesy of the government. And it is about conservation, right? Wrong. Three lies rolled up in one. It is not a free grant. Nothing the government spends comes from anywhere other than our pockets. It has nothing to do with conservation since whether or not you use it to fix a leaking tap or buy a water butt is voluntary, and administratively unmeasurable. And that is deliberate, to give the impression that it is a free grant towards your bill. But it is a perfect fit for the Goebbelsian model of propaganda. It will be repeated ad nauseum by government ministers and backbenchers, and by media hacks, none of whom will challenge its triple-fraud title. What the government will do is to slip a notional €100 into your right pocket - providing you make the mistake of signing up for the big scam. You will slip it into your left pocket for safety. The Revenue Commissioners, through some form of other tax or tax increase, will expertly dip your left pocket, extract the dosh, and hand it to Irish Water. Or you will use it to subsidise your bill payment (from your left pocket) Because who, other than you, is going to cover the €100 euro in the first place? Some fairy godmother? And the €100 is factored into revenue projections for Irish Water, otherwise there is no hope of its targets being met. The bill will not be €60 for a single household, it will be €160. It will not be €160 for a household of two or more, it will be €260. And you are going to pay the bill, right? Not if you have any sense, you wont. How many times would you fail to spot the lady and pay up to the three-card-trickster on a street corner before you decided it was a scam and moved on? This is a scam of monumental proportions built on a series of big lies. And when the people saw through that and expressed their dissent, what happened? The truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” Just as Goebbels laid out, it became necessary for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent - police violence and blanket partisanship from the media on the side of government, villifying sound, decent people the length and breadth of the country. But that hasnt worked. I think this government is a gonner...but only if this campaign keeps its momentum, its unity, its discipline. Stay vigilant. Stay on the job. Stay true.
