The owner of the just concluded AFRIMMA awards did put it in a great effort. Dealing with all those artists & staffing is not easy at all. What still surprising some folks (let alone DJs) is the criteria which was used to nominate the DJs The HARDEST part of nominating, flying in, accommodating & awarding the musicians was very well executed by the management of the event. On the other hand, the EASIEST part of replicating the same process with the DJs was poorly done ... yet we all agree DJs in the music industry are some the key people who break records / promote music. In my opinion, DJs merits should be based on the following: ● Technical Skills ● Eclectic style (i.e knowledge of diverse world music) ● Character ● Influence (uplifting others in the music industry i.e musicians & DJs & society as well). Going strictly with those 4 qualities, only 1 Kenyan DJ would have qualified for nomination & he was not even nominated. He hails from a small city outside Texas & if you ask him who should have won that Award, chances are he will tell you of a name of someone he personally mentored ... who is neither on that nomination list. LOL. Fellow new DJs dont stop rising up & supporting each other. Dont develop that old behavior found especially in old school DJs of not assisting upcoming talents. A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. You have not lost! You are on the right path. Read the book Give & Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success by Adam Grant. The book will not only help you as DJs but in real life relationships both personal & business.
