The passage of time is slowly taking its toll on this abandoned church in Grand Gulf, MS. The small community, which in the early 1800s was the third largest city in Mississippi, is nearly gone. Two buildings, this old church and a store, are all that remain of the vibrant town. The only inhabitants seem to be hunters in the few trailers dotted along the street. I have a special place in my heart for abandoned churches. I document them whenever I can and have been shooting photos of this church for many years. It takes only a moment for me to envision the townspeople walking to this church. I believe the small belfry housed a bell that could be rung to signal the church doors were open. Nothing remains inside the church any longer. It is an empty space, occupied only by my imagination of how things once were. But it served God well. For that I am sure. I dont even know what denomination met here. I have looked and cannot find a name for the church. But that is probably for the best. The people that entered looked God. And that is enough for me. The church is located in Claiborne County, just down the street from the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and past the Grand Gulf Military Park. Those of you who can should journey here soon to pay your respects to the old church. -- Marty Kittrell
