The past few weeks, we have witnessed deplorable acts of violence against Ethiopians living in Saudi Arabia. I can not begin to describe the overwhelming reaction of all Ethiopians from all over the world. Such national tragedies rally people around a cause. Nonetheless, they also prompt soul searching as a nation about our treatment of the weakest in society. I believe that this tragedy needs to change us in as much as it is a national shame to the Saudis. Given the right conditions, many societies are capable of doing the same thing to aliens and the weakest. I was part of the great Ethiopian run yesterday. I witnessed disturbing verbal and physical abuse of women runners by their fellow male runners during the race. It happened in a magnitude I could not fathom. Such instances serve as measures to our civility as a society. I hope we dont just curse others but look inwards to the resident deficiency as we continue to repatriate our fellow citizens.
