The phone rings, the man on the other end explains that a long last relative has died and had left you a million dollars. After you ascertain the validity of the story, you rejoice for this great and unexpected blessing. From those who have gone before us, we have received an even greater blessing that will likely last long after we are gone. An Englishman named Wesley retold the story of the Messiah’s birth and with the Herald Angels we now join and sing. Handel is another man who spent a great deal of his life in England and has given us words and music of the Hallelujah Chorus, fit for angels to sing in the heavenly throne room. Yet Handel invites us to join in on this angelic song and sing praises to our God. Though much of our hymnody comes from England, Americans have also contributed to this inherited wealth. Henry Jackson van Dyke has united us together so that we can say from our hearts, ‘…joyful, joyful we adore you…’ May we show ourselves appreciative of this great inheritance by honoring it, adding to it with new songs and music fitting of our Lord. Finally may we pass on to this great inheritance to next generation.
