The piriformis can be a stubborn muscle to stretch but a very problematic one when it becomes tight and inflamed. It can lead to problems such as sciatica, buttock pain, lower back pain and hip tightness. A simple and easy technique is to get a golf ball, lacrosse ball, even a large ball but the smaller the better. Put the ball in the middle of one buttock, find the tight spot (area of pain) and gently rock. When the pain reduces (normally 30 seconds) press down a little harder and rock again. Repeat this 3-4 times. This also works great for athletes as it means a deeper squat can be achieved. The video is more based for athletes, for pain relieve don’t worry about crossing the second leg.
