The planes were flying so low over my bike route today that I actually made eye contact with one of the pilots. He gave me a “thumbs up.” He must have seen me mouth the words “No way” because he shook his head Yes and mouthed the words “Yes way!” And then he said, (again, mouthing the words) “You’re the man” and I said, “No, YOU’RE the man!” I then said, “Pilots are very important. You’ve the responsibility of many, many lives—or souls, because that’s how people are referred to—on board.” And he said, “Yes, you’re right. But I bet you’re important too.” I said “I hope so.” “What do you do for a living,” he asked. “Nothing.” We both laughed. “I’m paid to teach, but it’s summer right now and I’m making an album” I said. “An album? What kind of music is it?” he asked. “It’s what you might call indie, alternative, post-rock, synth pop, progressive-type music with heavy electronic elements and psychonautic lyrics. I write about dreams, madness, and altered states a lot. It’s called Steam Donkey” I said. He laughed. “I know what that is,” he said. “I know you do,” I said. “You’re a pilot and you’ve studied mechanics and engineering. Pilots are smart. I respect pilots!” “Yes I have studied mechanics and engineering! When’s the album come out?” he asked. “Probably around November,” I said. “I’ll be sure to check it out!” he said. “See! You really ARE the man! God bless you, Mr. Pilot! It’s probably something you’d like to listen to in the cockpit!” And he flew away before I could tell him to Like the Steam Donkey Facebook page.
