The play of neon and sodium light over a car body at night is dynamic and fluid. I needed to find a way to mimic the dance of colour across metal. It had to be spontaneous, erratic and explosive. A paint brush was no use. I experimented with splashed paint, whacked and whipped paint, poured paint and rolled paint. I found it a huge relief from the tedium of predictable easel painting. It changed forever how I thought about the medium and how I could stretch its elasticity and possibility. I needed the paint to carry the sound and energy of engines revving, tyres screeching and horns blowing. I painted cars on the Strip in Las Vegas and on the Prom in Kirkcaldy.
