The police have recorded statements from four people in their investigation into a rumour that Gurney Drive is to be renamed Chin Peng Drive after the late leader of the outlawed Communist Party of Malaya (CPM), said Penang Police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi. He said one of the four was Penang Umno Youth chief Rafizal Abdul Rahim. Based on investigations, police believe more statements would be recorded from several quarters. The case is being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for causing anxiety to the public, he told reporters after the monthly assembly of the Penang Police Contingent Thursday. On Thursday, Wong Hon Wai, political secretary of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, lodged a police report on a rumour circulated via WhatsApp on the proposed name change. Rafizal was reported as having said on Dec 3 that the movement obtained the information from a source in the Chief Ministers Office, but had declined to reveal the source. Chief Minister Lim, at a media conference on Dec 4, stressed that the name Gurney Drive would be retained. In another development, Abdul Rahim said police had opened an investigation under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966 into the case of a dinner for CPM ex-soldiers held at the Taman Chai Leng Multipurpose Hall, Perai, near, here, on Nov 29. The event was held by an organisation not registered with the Registrar of Societies, he said. He said the police had so far recorded the statements of 25 individuals, and had received 24 reports on the event. About 800 people, believed to be former CPM members and their families from Malaysia and Thailand, had attended the dinner organised by the 21st Century Malaysia Friendship Association.
