The police institutions basic function in class divided society is to protect private property. Private property, capital, is a relationship that includes not just the capitalists and employed working class, but the relative surplus population of the working class , the unemployed many of whom are poor ; and concentrated in ghettos, barrios and hoods. The police are prison guards in what are diffuse , open air prisons.
