The population consists mainly of Seychelles Kreole - descendants of French colonists, who speak a dialect of Creole, who constitute 89% of the population. Other ethnic groups are Hindus - 5%, Malagasy (the indigenous people of Madagascar) and others at 3%. Almost 90% of the population live in the island of Mahe. The urban population accounts for 47% of the population. Average life expectancy is 71 years (77 women, 66 men). The average age is 27.7 years, men 26.6, women 28.8. Children under 15 years of age represent 26.4% of the population. The average annual population growth is 0.43%.
