The power of an Illusion - Society has created a mythology about the male athlete in particular. Do discussions of superior athletic ability always imply inferiority in other areas, like intellect? If an African American male is walking on a major college campus, people will assume that individual is a athlete or a coach of an athletic team, most people will not assume that person is a faculty member or a top level math or science student. So we sort of go back to the history of the minstrel show, in terms of the way that the American athlete is treated in American social life.
