WTACH video: https://youtube/watch?v=U_-BjZp-B6k&feature=youtu.be The Canada-UNICEF Kenya Funding Announcement that took place on Thursday, August 21, 2014 was a big success. Details of the purpose of this fund: $6,930,000 KENYA WGM Sub-Saharan Africa UNICEF Improving Access to Quality Education in Garissa and Turkana The project aims to increase the number of children, especially girls, attending school in Garissa and Turkana counties and provide them with a better education. To this end, the project is supporting the Government of Kenya to pilot innovative new ways of managing and delivering education for hard to reach children in marginalized and remote arid counties. The project seeks to enhance the quality of teaching and ensure safe and stimulating learning environments for children, particularly for girls. It supports the newly established counties of Garissa and Turkana to manage educational resources in a more efficient and transparent manner. It is also the first initiative to pilot the use of mobile phone technology to monitor the quality of learning in remote communities in Kenya, which will have a tremendous impact on how decision-makers access accurate and up to date information on schools and establish budget and policy priorities. Project activities include: •improving the learning environments of 200 primary schools (serving approximately 70,000 children, including nomadic children) with, for example, renovated classrooms, separate latrines for girls, school gardens, and teaching materials; •setting up and equipping 10 mobile schools serving approximately 600 nomadic children in early grades; •upgrading the national curriculum for in-service teacher training on healthy and safe schools that respond to the specific needs of girls; •training 600 teachers on child-centered teaching methods and positive discipline, as well as reinforcing their command of subject matter in English, science and mathematics; •training teachers and parents to participate in planning, management and monitoring to achieve better results for children, especially girls; •establishing a pilot data collection with mobile phones for 200 target schools, including information on school enrolment, learning assessments, student and teacher absenteeism, teacher-pupil ratios, and pupil-latrine ratios; •training education officials and teachers to use the data collected to plan educational resources more effectively; and •mapping out-of-school children so that head teachers can reach out to them.
