The powers-that-be in this Nation have methodically molded a large majority of Citizens into consumers. We shop at big box supermarkets because, through the aid of Federal government tax breaks and subsidies, they have become cheaper and more convenient than local farmers markets. We dine at fast food chains and nationally franchised restaurants because, through slick marketing, they have beaten out the Mom & Pop competition. We don’t grow our own produce or raise our own livestock because, well, we don’t have to. For the same reason, we don’t keep long-term food reserves in storage; there is always plenty of food for sale just down the road. Has the government won? Are we no longer a nation of Citizens, but consumers?
