The pressure on Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) continues. The fireplace of the pressure still remains in Sabirabad region. PFPA’s Sabirabad region is one of the strongest branches of the party with hundreds of activists. Recently, on 17 December Miraga Abbasov, member of the Sabirabad Branch of Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan was sentenced to 25 days of administrative arrest. He was accused of evasion of the military service. The party considered the arrest a politically motivated and believed that he was put in jail for his political activism. Now, other activists face the threat. Sahib Rustemli an his son Rail Restemli today will be brought before the court and may be sentenced to tens of days of arrest in jail. Sahib Rustemli, yesterday made a statement for the media, saying the pressure pursued the revenge on him, the statement read as following: “My son’s vehicle was stopped by the traffic police and taken to police parking area. I came to police station to take the car. The police officers were very rude to me and there was confrontation among us. My son had to write the explanation letter as if he had resisted to police. I was told I would be arrested on the administrative charges. The police told me that they had tapped my telephone conversation with the lawyer, when I had asked him to assist the arrested Miraga Aabbasov. I think the motivation of my arrest is my help to our arrested member”. Yesterday, head of the Youth Committee of the party’s Sabirabad branch Etibar Fatiyev was also detained yesterday, when he took some food TO Miraga Abbasov. Later yesterday, he was released. Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan considers all the arrests, detentions and pressures politically motivated and calls on the international community to squeeze the grip on the authorities. The government of Azerbaijan has no intention for democratization and it may move from authoritarianism to dictatorship should the necessary steps not taken on time.
