The problem of the 20th Century will be the problem of the color - TopicsExpress

The problem of the 20th Century will be the problem of the color line. W.E.B. DuBois This weeks Time Magazine cover story is titled The Tragedy of Ferguson. Joe Klein, a Time columnist writes: Blacks represent 13% of the population but commit 50% of the murders, 90% of Black victims are murdered by other blacks. The facts suggest that history is not enough to explain this social disaster. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former NBA player, writes in the same issue: Unless we want the Ferguson atrocity to be swallowed and become more than an intestinal irritation to history, we have to address the situation not just as another act of systemic racism but what it really is: class warfare. (I would counsel anyone interested in what is happening in Ferguson to read both Klein and Jabbars entire columns). (I would make the argument that both internal and external issues need to looked at. America should address the external issues that Black face each day: institutional racism, segregated communities, astronomically high unemployment, substandard medical care, etc. and pay close attention to the numbers Klein has provided.)
