The proposed decision of NDA to have 100% FDI in Defence is an extremely positive step. Media reports state that only those companies would be allowed to have 100% FDI who would do state-of-the-art manufacturing in India and would transfer the entire technology to India. This would essentially help India especially because even when India have made reasonable strides in Defence research our Ordnance Factories are pathetic in their manufacturing skills. Reality is that India makes better quality cars than rifles. 100% FDI in Defence will not hamper DRDO because DRDO is primarily into missile research and other high end defence research . At the same time, Brahmos Aerospace is a perfect example of how collaboration between DRDO and Foreign organisations have helped India in developing quality defence equipment like Brahmos cruise missiles which India makes with Russian collaboration. However FDI in defence from countries like China should definitely not be allowed. NDA would surely put these conditions in the final policy.
