The proverbs of Solomon . . .For gaining wisdom and being instructed; for understanding insightful sayings; for receiving wise instruction in righteousness, justice & integrity; for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man--a wise man will listen and increase his learning, and a discerning man will obtain guidance. . . The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. . . . . whoever listens to me will live securely and be free from the fear of danger. - Proverbs 1:1-7, 33 (Holman translation) I have made it a habit of reading one Proverb a day from the Bible. There are 31 Proverbs, so there is one for every day of the month. (Of course the months where there are 30 days, or February I never get to finish the whole book, but thats ok.) There is a lot of wisdom in there. No matter how many times I read them, they always speak to me. This morning as I was re-reading Proverbs 1, verse 33 caught my eye. At first I thought, Well, a really wise person can still have insecure times & be in danger once in awhile. I dont think you can avoid it nowadays. Then I read the footnotes in my study Bible. (By the way, if you dont have a study Bible, they are VERY helpful with understanding the scriptures.) Heres what it said about verse 33: Dont ignore Gods advice, even if it is painful for the present. It will keep you from greater pain in the future. The NIV trans. of v. 33 says, will live in safety & be at ease, rather than live securely. There is a peace that comes in the heart when we let God take control & guide our decisions. Each day we are faced with choices & decisions. If we make wise decisions, even if they are difficult & painful, we can go on with a peace in our hearts about the outcome. However, if we make foolish decisions, the results and/or consequences of those decisions can last a very, very long time. Every decision we make is our choice. If we are wise, we will seek Gods guidance!
