The provincial transport minister and several borough mayors got together the other day to announce a variety of construction projects (read road closures) and measures aimed at making the nightmare that Montreal traffic has become, more manageable. Politicians and public transit proponents want us to spend more time using public transit and less time using our cars. The problem is, were not doing it. So, how do you get people to change their habits when nothing up to now seems to have worked ? The provinces answer is to add new parking spaces at train stations (only one of these stations is on the island itself, in Beaconsfield). to add some new reserved bus lanes to already congested streets, and finally, to ask people to car pool. That should do the trick. Not. Look, its hard to argue with the idea that we need to convince people to use their cars less, because our roads werent built to handle the flow of traffic we now have to deal with. But there must be a better way than simply adding parking spots to train stations. In the recent spirit of government asking for input from the public, Im asking for your suggestions, as a motorist or commuter, as to what you think needs to be done to improve the mess that traffic in this city has become.
