The public update has been delayed until next week. I understand that people are concerned. I have seen the draft and it is a positive message. I believe that it is something that we can build upon. I have expressed my concerns about the lack of information being made public. We would prefer a more open process and have indicated that I would be speaking to the update upon its release and attempting to fill people in further. As people have noticed, we are at odds with the city’s take on the emergency measures. To clarify, we were never engaged in any meeting with emergency personnel and had no input. We expressed concern months ago regarding certain aspects of the measures being taken. Sirens and signs were deemed unnecessary last winter. A return to “the sky is falling because of the dams” is an unproductive and silly message and not worthy of attention. We remain committed to the goals and objectives of the technical committee. This process has the potential to set a new agenda and a means for positive and inclusive decision making. It is an opportunity that should not be squandered. The Colliery Dams Park Preservation Society is being promoted as the most effective community group in the recent history of Nanaimo. We should all take pride that we are strong advocates for positive change.
