The purpose of the inaugural Sports Day is to honour former South African president Nelson Mandela for his contribution and influence in the South African sports The South African sports ministry has confirmed that the inaugural Nelson Mandela Sports Day will comprise of three matches at the FNB Stadium on August 17, 2013. With Bafana set to face Burkina Faso before the Springboks play Argentina in the Rugby Championship match, the organizers have added another game which will start just after midday. South African legends will play against Italian legends in the first match, with the likes of Jomo Sono and Lucas Radebe expected to feature for the SA team. Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula said at a press conference on Thursday that the world should expect an extraordinary event in honour of former president Nelson Mandela. “People should expect an extraordinary occasion. We are blessed to have Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Hence, we will continue to celebrate him and celebrate what we have that other countries don’t have,” said Mbalula. Madiba will not be able to attend the event at the FNB Stadium as he remains in a critical, but stable condition in hospital.
