The question…Should we repent or ask for forgiveness daily? ESV Bible Version Luke 11:1 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread, 4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.” Mark 11: 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Acts:26 :19-20 “Therefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance. 2 Corinthians 7 9-11 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. ß(because they repented and turned!) Matt 6:14-15 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15. but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. ß(here we see Jesus showing us that we will bear our sin if we also do not forgive!) Luke 17 3-4 3. Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.” Romans 4: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; Please, Please Read Matthew chapter 16: 13-28 and Chapters 17-18. You will see Jesus saying “what ever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven”. What does He mean? He explains it in another parable of the “unforgiving servant” in Matt 18: 21-35. Jesus is showing us that what ever “grudges” or “debts” we hold on earth WILL follow us to heaven! Jesus explains this to Peter and us 3 different ways here in Matt 16-18! This is very important to understand. (Below, his was a response from me to another brother) This has been a greatly needed study for me. It will likely be something that I will think about for a long time ahead as I read God’s word. My thoughts are this. It looks like repentance or forgiveness of sin is a “one shot” deal. It was (and I believe) that it was brought about by the sacrifice of the pure “Lamb of God” Jesus Christ. He did die for our past present and future sins. The difference is that I felt that we needed to ask for forgiveness as we “mess up” or fall into sin or were tempted into sin. Simply put, we do fall short of the duty of a “Christ-like” life. (In thought, words or deed). Looking at the scriptures above, I see very clearly that “if we want this forgiveness of sins from God our Father through Jesus Christ… we must forgive ALL who have wronged us”. In the “Lord’s Prayer” Jesus tells us how to pray… In Luke Chapter 11. Jesus tells us to ask the Father to “...forgive us our sins…that we may be forgiven”. I say this to you; ”How often should we pray this prayer, once in our life?” You see the support in scripture for my view here? It’s really good that you brought this to my attention, because there is a lot of scripture that backs up your view. I find it refreshing when I am feeling like I may have it wrong here. In a good way I mean to say…! I see the emphasis God has put on man to forgive others as a priority FIRST or it will cling to us all the way to heaven. It’s more important to forgive others in order to be forgiven! You see that in the scriptures on repentance too! (Matthew 13 14-17, Matthew 4:17, Matthew 11:20-21, Luke 10:13, Matthew 12:41, Luke 5:31-32, Luke 13:3-5, Luke 15:7-10, Luke 16:30, Luke 17:3-4, Luke 24:47, Revelation 2:5, Revelation 2:16, Revelation 2:21-22, Revelation 3:3, Revelation 3:19,Revelation 9:20-21) The simple doctrine of God is this; God first, then others and ourselves last! So cool! Praise the Lord for showing and teaching me this again! We all need constant refreshers like this from God’s word because we, as sinful beings, constantly need to be reminded of the TRUTH!
