The question is answered in English and Urdu (Roman) so as to facilitate our readers. English: Purchasing goods in installments is permissible but there are a few conditions to be met. Discussing all those conditions here would make the answer very lengthy. So I would directly discuss the sale of gold in installments to answer your question. RasoolAllah Mohammad (SAW) said: الذهب بالذهب ربا إلا هاء وهاء ، والبر بالبر ربا إلا هاء وهاء والشعير بالشعير ربا إلا هاء وهاء والتمر بالتمر ربا إلا هاء وهاء The selling of gold for gold is riba (usury) except if the exchange is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and similarly, the selling of wheat for wheat is riba (usury) unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and the selling of barley for barley is riba (usury) unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and dates for dates is riba (usury) unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount. (Saheeh Al-Bukhari and Muslim) There is one more hadith which was narrated by Ibn Shihab (R.A) that Malik bin Aus said, I was in need of change for one-hundred Dinars. Talha bin Ubaid-Ullah called me and we discussed the matter, and he agreed to change (my Dinars). He took the gold pieces in his hands and fidgeted with them, and then said, Wait till my storekeeper comes from the forest. Umar was listening to that and said, By Allah! You should not separate from Talha till you get the money from him, for Allahs Apostle said, The selling of gold for gold is riba (usury) except if the exchange is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and similarly, the selling of wheat for wheat is riba (usury) unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and the selling of barley for barley is usury unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and dates for dates, is usury unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount Hence when a person buys gold, silver or even buys money (exchanging money for change or currency), it is important that you pay the money upfront and take possession of gold in the same sitting. It is not permissible to pay the money in installments and take the possession of gold later, nor to take possession of gold now and pay the money later. I would suggest that you save the money every month with you or with a trustworthy person and once the amount reaches the capacity to purchasing the desired quantity of gold, you may use the money and buy the gold or golden ornaments (even silver). And this is the view of majority of the scholars. Buying other goods in installments or deferred payment like cars, houses, or any other thing without the stipulation of interest is permissible. Urdu: Cheezo koh installments mein khareedney ki ijaazat hain lekin kuch shuroot hain jisey poorey karna laazmi hain. Yeh mumkin nahi ke saarey shuroot yahaan par likhey jaayein kyun jawaab bohat zyaada taweel ho jaayega. Kisi aur sawaal mein bataa doonga. Seedhey baat kartey hain soney ki khareed koh lekar. Soney koh qisto mein nahi khareeda jaa sakhta hain. RasoolAllah (SAW) ka irshaad hain: Agar tum soney koh soney se khareedo toh riba hain siwaahe agar haatho haath aur baraabar wazan mein liya jaaye, waise he gehu, jaw aur khajoor koh usi zaat se khareedo toh riba hain siwaahe agar haatho haath aur baraabar wazan mein liya jaaye. (Sahih Bukhari aur Muslim) Soney koh qisto mein paise dekar leney ki Islam ijaazat nahi deta hain. Aap na toh paise qisto mein jamaa karke baadh mein sona le sakhtey ho, aur naa pehley sona lekar baadh mein qist adaa kar sakhtey ho. Behtar yeh hain ke aap yeh qist ki raqam koh apney paas yaa kisi ameen ke paas jamaa karein aur jab yeh raqam itni ho jaaye jissey apke khwaahish ke mutaabik sona khareeda jaa sakey, toh is paise se who khareed lein haatho haath. Kisi doosri cheez ka qisto mein farokh jaise ghar, car waghaira ki ijaazat hain agar soodh ka muaamla na ho. Aur ulema ki yahi raai hain is muaamley mein.
