The rate of participation in our elections is pitiful, especially for local elections. Local government is the level that most people interact with. AS Tip ONeill once said all politics is local politics People want their streets fixed, good schools, nice parks, streetlights, good police and quick police response. It is our local government that furnishes these services. Be aware of what is going on your area. Register and vote. If you dont vote, you are essentially adding one more nail to the coffin of American democracy. Make no bones about it-there is a powerful oligarchy/autocracy that wields a disproportionate share of policy and influence in our nation. Yes their money and ability to manipulate our affairs will always be a factor in our body politic but when you abstain from voting we are only one step closer to their total control of our nation. If our democracy dies, it will go out with a gradual whimper not with a bang.
