The real battle in all battles is to come out of these with ones soul still not vanquished by hate, ones heart still not emptied of love and compassion, ones conscience still clean enough to allow a quiet, lonely hour with oneself, and above all , ones humility compromised neither by victory nor by bitterness over loss. This must be the toughest of all battles in every war. Many have shown the path and shown that wars can be fought on principles, with no loss of love in ones heart. Guru Gobind Singh, who spoke of the supremacy of love even after the most grievous personal losses any man can suffer, is probably the greatest among them. For ordinary soldiers, even to be reminded of him in battle is to be redeemed of all possible sins and scars that battles often inflict, if fought with eyes blinded by hate. No victory is worth buying in exchange for goodness put in ones heart by nature.
