The real solution to the problems at the VA probably have to do more with funding than anything else. Of course Congress doesnt want to deal with that, but that is the core problem. Not enough doctors and nurses in the system to provide the care necessary. Ultimately they are going to have to allow people to get treatment outside of the system and reimburse the private doctors until the backlog is reduced. Ultimately they are going to have to examine and see if moving towards a more medicare type of system wouldnt work better than having Veterans Hospital facilities. They would still need to keep some Veterans Hospitals, because they would specialize in war related injuries, but much of the VA does could be better handled by existing private facilities.
