The reality is pretty simple and fairly sad: the world of broadcast news cannot exist without advertising dollars, and lots of them. Said dollars dont come pouring in unless the ratings prove themselves worthy of hefty investments in purchasing seconds or minutes worth of airtime. And nothing drives news ratings like war, or the drums relentlessly marching us towards it. People who speak coherently and knowledgeably about the perils and flaws of putting Americans in harms way for dubious or blatantly false reasons dont exactly make people want to run out and buy cars or boner pills. And so the voices of reason are seldom heard on television. Just the way they werent in the fall of 2002, before we waded neck deep into the eternal quagmire of senseless death and mutilation called Iraq.
