The reason FB doesnt have a dislike button and never will. There would be far too many topical issues that would get so many downvotes that it would 1.) Help people realize that most of our views are pretty universal on subjects that truly matter, and 2.) as a result of that emergent realization, policy change spurred by popular votes on facebook would be inevitable. Of course, our tyrannical government that controls most of us would never allow either of those to happen. Our governing system is much too efficient in keeping us busy with our own lives and worries.. disconnected (actually) from the system that dictates the standards and laws by which we arrange ourselves. Whens the last time you found yourself questioning the speed limit of a certain road? What if you think it should be a 35 instead of of a 30? And what if you could convince people that the same road should be a 25? What if your opinion of the speed limit of a certain road ACTUALLY MATTERED? Anyone from Small Town, MN can tell you theres speed traps set up in pretty much every small town, or on the roads right before that small town. Anyone from the Twin Cities can tell you theres speed traps set up along highways. Is that how were supposed to be? Constantly monitored by highway patrol making sure were not going 85 in a 65 when the road is totally clear and (depending on the car and driver skill) that speed may have been entirely safe? Right now Id say people kinda view it as black and white.. theres people in the world (such as myself) that sometimes push it to the edge of what they consider to be the speed they can get away with on a given road, sometimes theyll get pulled over, other times not. But does that mean that the times they got to work or to their friends place in record time are somehow invalid, or without utility? I mean tell me, is it really proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that most people would not drive at responsible speeds if there were no speed limit signs posted at all? It would definitely be a good idea to keep the yellow (recommended) speed limit signs up, and school zone signs up.. but apart from that, what real research is out there that shows people will always behave poorly on the road when unregulated by how fast they can make their vehicle move? I guess its really just another method of fear conditioning in my mind. The fear of getting ticketed by an authority figure whos really no more in authority of you than you are of yourself.. I mean, a police officer puts in his hours just like everybody else, his ultimate goal is most likely to live a happy and healthy life, a goal very similar to yours. Yet we fear (some more than others) this quasi-oppression from people that are really our motivational equals (more or less.) Even these people dont make the laws.. they are the enforcers, and I scoff at the notion that there has never been a police officer that didnt see the merit of a given law, yet has enforced it anyway. Just like at our places of employment, there a certain rules and policies which we much abide by, even if we dont necessarily recognize the point or value of it.. I know.. huge tangent. Keep in mind though that facebook, with its pretty universal userbase, is already growing into the perfect platform for societal discussion, and will continue (at its current pace) to represent an ever-broadening picture of our societal whole. The true possibilities for something like the facebook phenomenon are actually pretty staggering. I think if we really wanted to be involved with our governing system, we should be able to like or dislike passages of The Constitution itself. We should use things like Skype and other video call services to communicate with our elected officials, those who many outside of government never even really get to know, which is strange considering theyre supposed to be representing us and our fervent (or apathetic) ideals. We should develop new systems of societal interaction that reflect the the current state of our incredibly fast and accurate communications technology. Im telling you, the more information that is given back to We, the People of our once strong and unified nation, the more personal power we gain to affect positive and purposeful change. The more power we have individually, the more equilateral respect we will have for another, as each of us would hold stake in the burden and responsibility of commanding, earning, and keeping that respect. Coming back to the dislike thing.. FB already recognizes that the ability to not like something is possible since you can unlike something that you previously liked.. Given my grand conspiracy theory of facebook dislikes and speed limits, do you think fb will ever implement a dislike button? King-Size Milky Way to the first person that says I would DEF dislike this entire haberdashery you call a post! haha
