Private sector unions need to challenge the environmentalists by lobbying for infrastructure that will actually make a contribution to society: water storage, advanced sewage treatment, desalination, an LNG terminal off the coast to import/export natural gas, upgrades to existing rail, and repairs and upgrades to bridges and freeways. There is no reason private sector labor cannot continue to play a vital role in California, if they would accept open competition for contracts with non-union firms, and if they would stand up to the environmentalist extremists.
