The reason why former Chavakalians are good in business today is because walianza kitambo. We had this illegal business we called Ndonyo. That is, the selling of stuff, especially unused during the term, like bars of soap, bed sheets, spoons, plates etc at a cheaper price in order to have a nice holiday at home. The trade was common during closing day and happened at Chavakali Market. Ndonyo was all that was in Chavakalians mind every closing day. If your spoon got lost during the school term, you would be sure to find it at Jogoo Hotel next to the Kakamega/Kisumu bus stage. In fact, some collected spoons and plates then visited Jogoo Hotel, ordered for ugali/chicken stew which would be served on the same plate he came with. After enjoying his meal, he leaves the plate and spoon at the hotel as payment! Mr Makani tried to counter this trade by patrolling the market every closing day, riding a bicycle, but for once, I can say he wasnt successful!
