The recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa only emphasizes the fundamental importance of education and WISEs endeavors in this regard. The three nations hit the hardest by the Ebola outbreak have some of the lowest literacy rates in the world: Liberia (60.8%); Guinea (41%), and Sierra Leone (35.1%). With such low literacy rates, it is not surprising that rumors, like that Ebola was spread by aircraft flown by witches, and that Liberias efforts to spray disinfectant was actually Ebola germs, could gain traction. While Zambia can take great pride that its literacy rate far exceeds that of these countries, WISE works in the areas of the country where access to education remains a major concern. The Zambian school year follows the calendar year, early January to early December. We are currently evaluating the number of scholarships we can provide for the 2015 school to girls (and some deserving boys) from the remote bush areas of the Western Province. Any help you could possibly give would be greatly appreciated! (Photos: Kalukundwe Basic School, Kaoma District, Zambia; WISE has provided scholarships to at least 8 Kalukundwe students.)
