Furthermore, it will drive the cost of campaigning so far into the stratosphere that only the wealthy or the extremely well-connected will be able to run for office. Justice Breyer said it best. The “appearance of corruption” can make matters worse. It can lead the public to believe that its efforts to communicate with its representatives or to help sway public opinion have little purpose. And a cynical public can lose interest in political participation altogether. When your voice can no longer be heard, why bother?
