The recent cold spell we experienced here in NC led me to recall - TopicsExpress

The recent cold spell we experienced here in NC led me to recall some cold times in WV. I recall one winter it was so cold that Haystack, the large swimming hole on Barkers creek froze over. There was also a small tributary with a small waterfall (10 feet or so) that emptied into Haystack. We would take our sleigh (sleds) up the tributary and fly over the waterfall onto frozen Haystack. Quite a thrill. We would, in addition to sledding on Tipple Hill in Bud, we would take a chance on trying to ride down Bobs Branch Road. Few of us could make it to Rt. 10. Back to Tipple Hill, dozens of us would gather, set an automobile tire on fire for heat, and ride well into the night. We would go home with blackened faces from the soot of the burning tire. Some of the names of riders were Boyd, Morris, Jack, Barbara, Roy Ann, Patty, Bonnie, Shockie, Edith, Darrell, Sandy.
