The recent fad within pet diets has been to feed them human food. - TopicsExpress

The recent fad within pet diets has been to feed them human food. An entire industry of pet food based in human ingredients has been developed. But the truth regarding this issue is that pets require a specific set of nutrients which may not be found in home-cooked human food based diets. An article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association evaluated more than 200 home-prepared diet recipes for dogs from the Internet, pet care books, etc. 95 percent of the recipes evaluated were deficient in at least one essential nutrient. Rotation among ingredients and recipes was unlikely to correct these deficiencies because most of the foods used have similar nutritional profiles and therefore similar deficiencies. There is also not any research showing that other fad diets such as Grain Free, Holistic or Organic are any better for pets than other common pet food diets found in stores.
