The remastered print of Circus World is a gem. Madrid has never looked so good. I learned a few things today after watching a movie that I know nearly by heart. 1- This was the last movie written by Ben Hecht. The committee approach tempered he quality, though. It is very much a John Wayne script 2- Thats why David Niven quit the role of Cap and why Billy Wilder backed out of directing the film. Henry Hathaway is more than up to the task but could have used an editor with more leverage against The Duke. 3- Pio Nock (uncle of Bello) not only did his own gags but doubled for Richard Conte on the wire. Catch the chair gag at 7:30 of this youtubery and tell me if a certain clown we know and love might have taken part of it to heart. Pios family contracted at Tommy Bartletts for many years and have been circusing for over 170 years.
