The republicans now have two years to demonstrate that they know how to run the country. They get the responsibility of creating jobs, taking care of the environment, expanding education, and so on. Two years from now, we will let them know how well they did their job. The party as a whole has been tainted by the loudest and craziest voices. But ... now is the chance for the rest of the party to demonstrate that they have Americas best interests as their goal. Two years from now, we will let them know how well they did their job. They might have won this election -- that was predictable six years ago, because of the way our electoral system is structured. The contested senate seats were in red states that Obama won in 2008. The dems were never going to hold those seats against a determined republican machine. But yes -- they might have won this election, because the fanatics always turn out to vote, much more than the average guy -- but the republicans cannot claim to have won the hearts and minds of a majority of Americans. They have invested too much time and money vilifying the majority. If they remember that they represent all Americans, they will build a legacy. If they do not remember who pays their salaries (hint, it is not Charles and David Koch), then they will have a very different legacy. The republicans want to portray these election results as a mandate. A few years down the road however we may see these election results as the last desperate gasp of a dying demographic. The issue is not about whether republicans know how to win elections -- the issue is whether or not they know how to govern. Based on the evidence of history, thats a lesson they forgot when Ike died.
