The reputations of various Allied WW2 Generals ended up in tatters once the ULTRA secret broke in the early/ mid 1970s . In short the Allies were reading the German signals. The Enigma story is very long and complicated. It started with The Poles who built one machine and when Poland was invaded , fled to France and from there to the UK where at GCCS at Bletchley Park, perhaps the greatest code breaking event of the 20th century took place. But sometime in 1943 the Allied effort went blank - because the Germans , especially in the U Boat War, had changed the settings. Enigma (2001) starts at this stage and continues as a rare intelligent film about the overall code breaking effort , tied in with internal jealousies, a mystery , the obligatory romance (Kate WInslet WITH clothes) and some fine understated suspense as GCCS worms its way back into the SIGINT effort . Rarely has code breaking become such an engrossing film and there us no James Bondery. Its all about boffins slogging it out and doing their bit for the overall effort.
