The research confirms that in previous generations marriages where the husband was better qualified – and therefore likely to be the breadwinner – were more likely to last. However, the trend has now gone into reverse. The pattern of relationships where the wife has the “educational advantage” being more likely to break down has disappeared, and couples who are evenly matched are more likely to stay together than relationships in which the husband is educated to a higher level.
