The resiliency of the Strong-Hearts of Native resistance along the proposed TransCanada Keystone XL tar sands pipeline corridor has been strengthen with the announcement of the U.S. Department of State putting off a decision on the KXL pipeline. There is some talk the State Department won’t make a decision, if any, until after the November elections. But, during this time period, our Strong-Hearts will not back-off and will keep the sacred fires of resistance burning strong, eyes wide open and ears to the ground. The proposed KXL pipeline route through the state of Nebraska is being contested in the Nebraska courts, which, could take more than six months they say. Because of this, there is no current legal route through Nebraska until its court makes a decision. Again, the U.S. government doesn’t want to recognize that the proposed route already is illegal! A major part of the route of the proposed pipeline would be located within the territory of the Great Sioux Nation, as recognized in the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851. This territory is where many sacred places are located, as well as the graves of many ancestors. In the meantime, while The U.S. delays a decision, the Alberta, Canada tar sands will continue to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, non-stop, creating environmental destruction and contamination of the precious water of life. There is never any mention by Canadian Prime Minister Harper or President Barack Obama on the issue of the human and Native rights of the Dene, Cree and Métis being violated. There are continued reports of cancer deaths and illnesses from Native people living downstream from the tar sands. During this delay, climate chaos will continue from the energy intensive and heavy carbon footprint of the tar sands. The tar sands are like a giant monster (Iya) swallowing up communities. It tries to keep people confused with diversions as it has many arms and legs pushing pipelines, trucking and trains in all directions, by different corporations and with many disguises. The heart of this monster that pumps out this highly toxic and corrosive black blood that becomes a black snake as it extends out throughout Turtle Island must be killed at source. The Keystone XL pipeline is not in the national interest of the U.S.; is not in the interest of Grandmother Earth and Nature; and not in the best interest of the health of the Indigenous Peoples that live in Canadas sacrifice zone of the tar sands industrial complex. – Tom “Mato Awanyankapi” Goldtooth, Indigenous Environmental Network
