The rise in global average temperatures this century MUST stay below 2 degrees C to prevent devastating climate effects such as crop failure (= reduction in crop yield to a level that there is no marketable surplus or the nutritional needs of the community cannot be met) and melting glaciers. The International Energy Agency warned very recently that the world is on course for a rise of 3.6 to 5.3 C due to the record high global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions last year. The Arctic has oil and gas reserves which could draw investment of up to $100 billion within a decade. Environmentalists although warn Arctic drilling to be too risky and could have devastating consequences for the region.
