The roots of YWCA Metro St. Louis stretch back to the 1904 Worlds - TopicsExpress

The roots of YWCA Metro St. Louis stretch back to the 1904 Worlds Fair when the agency was formed to provide housing for rural women who came to St. Louis to work at the Fair. The Phyllis Wheatley branch was formed a short time later to provide African-American women and their families the same services. (In 1947, the national organization chose St. Louis to be the model of integration for the two agencies.) During segregation, Phyllis Wheatley hosted black dignitaries who came to St. Louis but who were not welcome in the citys hotels. Maya Angelou was one such guest. Ms. Angelous contribution to race relations is immense, as is her loss. YWCA Metro St. Louis joins millions around the world in mourning the death of this inspirational woman and pledges anew to live our motto: Empowering Women and Eliminating Racism. nyti.ms/1kfU7oR
