...The sanctions did hurt one thing in Iran: The Iranian people. By enforcing the embargo in the knowledge that Shanghai Pact countries would support Iran, America made a grave miscalculation. This led to a system that merely impoverished the innocent public, deprived them of their quality of life and condemned them to rising inflation and low wages despite price hikes and widespread unemployment. As always, it was innocent people who paid the price. The West must abandon the fantasy that says “We changed Iran through sanctions.” There is indeed a change in Iran, but that was something planned long beforehand by the Rouhani regime.
