The scar remains as a reminder that a thicker skin is needed to survive in a world where people are expendable. Replaceable. Interchangeable. In our attention deficit-driven society, rare is the relationship that can sustain us. We don’t want to invest the time. Perhaps that’s why we are so leery of showing people who we are. Why bare our souls to a world ready to cut us out of the picture if we stumble or take one misstep that reveals our human imperfections rather than the shiny, happy version of ourselves that we so skillfully project? Smile and take a selfie. It’s easier to show the pretty parts. Put your best face forward for the world to see. Be engaging and charming as you build entire relationships without ever uttering a word. It’s easier not to care. We live in a world where people share the quotes without cracking the spines, and communicate sentiment via acronyms. When it comes to human interaction, it’s the sensitive fool that gets left behind. Anyone who says I’m hurt is too fragile. Any expression of honest emotion is deemed erratic. Our innermost feelings are expressed in emoticons because an animated frowny face is far less frightening than a human being standing in front of us shedding real tears. It breaks my heart and makes me feel like part of a society without a soul.
