The science geek in me has been thinking about bees for the last - TopicsExpress

The science geek in me has been thinking about bees for the last several days. Here are some thoughts that I keep having that are not related to the typical suspects. 1) Are we messing with the indigenous bees by planting all kinds of non-native species in the area that theyre not able to process? 2) Are those who are raising bees introducing non-native bees into the environment that push the native bees out of the picture? 3) Are we landscaping our outside spaces to actively support the lives of our bees or do things like weed-whacking, grooming, removal of hives, and some of the obsessive-compulsive weed removal from our lawns contributing to the downfall? Like everything else, I believe all of these issues to be far more complex than attributable to one item, for instance, the use organic (as in chemically organic, not raised organically) pesticides...then again, are organic pesticides good for the long-term sustainability of bees?
