The seemingly deliberate choosing of thug imagery by the media is really no different than the dehumanization tactics used by military forces to characterize their enemy as less than human savages/animals (just look at the old cartoon propaganda from WWI and WWII). A black kid in baggy jeans should be no more a threat than a white kid in baggy jeans...yet one is viewed as a thug while the other is seen as merely making a fashion statement. The question we face is how do we increase our awareness of the effects of this type of subliminal conditioning on our perception of reality and how can we counter such internalized prejudices?
