The skies over the country she loved so much and exhorted other Filipinos to explore , are darker now that she is gone. Tita Susan Calo-Medina , known to many as the tireless traveler who closed every edition of Travel Time with her signature,Huag Maging Dayuhan sa Sariling Bayan! passed on this morning. Though she was best known as the enthusiastic promoter of local tourism, there are still many who remember her as a stage actress ( in many of the late Rolando Tinios Teatro Pilipino productions) as well as producer of stage plays in the late 70s and early 80s. She was also ,in various stages of her life, a dress designer and art dealer. I guess that is why we bonded so well. Our shared interests--the theater, this country and its people and culture and traditions, good art, clear writing, comfortable and well-made clothes, good food and the pursuit of a personal style that obliterated any kind of pretension and artifice in life ---shaped and molded me when I was in my 30s. I started writing scripts for Travel Time in the late 80s and thankfully, became a life-long friend who shared many a bumpy road, a less-than-comfortable lodging, a trek in the mud , swarms of mosquitoes, and always...always, a good laugh. Tita, you will always be one of the most AUTHENTIC human beings I have had the privilege to know. I will always remember our Travels with my Aunt episodes, the advice, the fearless opinions, the way you showed tough love and maternal concern to all who came into your life. Just two days ago, you called to remind me that we had to meet about your 2015 projects. No need for that na.The biggest journey, the most spectacular vistas, the panoramas of exquisite and unimaginable beauty now wait to be explored --along with Tito Johnny and Grace. Dont worry about Marc, and Ching and Lui. You have raised them to be just as authentic as you were. To Titas friends and admirers, her wake will start tonight at the Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park. Let us celebrate a life so well-lived! and a journey so fearlessly taken.
